The MBF-2.4H is a specific 2.4mm flux-coated manganese bronze filler rod manufactured under the Omega brand by Torchmaster Australia. The "H" designates a 200-gram "Handy Pack" consisting of 500mm-long rods.
While predominantly distributed in the Australian market for Oxy-Acetylene gas brazing, it can also be adapted for specialised TIG brazing tasks involving cast iron, steel, and copper alloys.
- Ferrous metals: Cast iron, malleable iron, alloy steel, and carbon steel.
- Non-ferrous metals: Copper, brass, and copper-zinc alloys.
- Dissimilar combinations: Joining steel to cast iron or copper without melting the base metal.
- Galvanized parts: Allows brazing without vaporizing or heavily damaging the surrounding protective zinc coating.
- Flux Management: The "F" in MBF means it carries an external flux coating. In standard TIG welding, heavy flux coating creates massive arc instability, black soot, and tungsten contamination. For true TIG brazing, professionals typically prefer bare rods (like the MBB-2.4H variant) combined with standard Argon shielding gas. If you must use this flux-coated version, the flux coating is often cracked off manually before feeding, or the rod is used with a very specific, low-amperage "braze welding" technique.
- Fume Hazard: Because RBCuZn-C alloys contain significant amounts of zinc, TIG brazing will cause the zinc to boil off as toxic white smoke. Always use a high-quality respirator and proper source extraction.
- Settings: Use DC- (Direct Current Electrode Negative) with a sharp 2% Thoriated or Lanthanated tungsten. Direct the heat primarily onto the thicker base metal or the puddle itself, rather than hitting the manganese bronze rod directly with the intense TIG arc
