New Vinyl Record - Squirrel Nut Zippers - Lost Songs Of Doc Souchon

BFRSD 2021

Since 1995, the Squirrel Nut Zippers have sacked and plundered the old, weird America then sailed off to further distant lands. They have used New Orleans as their hideout and base of operations. Jean-Lafitte-like the hide in the lee side of barrier island, receiving goods and masking dark back channel deals; hiding in cellars or in plain view.

In 2020, fans were able to gaze into the tea leaves that make up their brand new album: Lost Songs of Doc Souchon to see if they can discern their own destiny. Now, on the heals of the successful reunion album from SNZ members Jimbo Mathus, "13 Stories," "Lost Songs of Doc Souchon " is finally available on limited edition vinyl for RSD 2021.

Lost Songs Of Doc Souchon follows the band’s last studio album, Beasts Of Burgundy, which debuted at #4 on the Billboard Jazz Album Chart. Also, Andrew Bird makes his first appearance on a Squirrel Nut Zippers album since Perennial Favorites (1998, Mammoth)

“This new album was inspired by all of the mysterious characters from the history of New Orleans jazz music,” commented band leader Jimbo Mathus. “It speaks to the hidden roots of where our aesthetic, interests and philosophy comes from. It pulls on the hidden thread.”

Lost Songs Of Doc Souchon contains ten new tracks, a combination of newly written Zippers material, along with a few songs from past times.

The first single from the album “Animule Ball” was originally recorded back in 1938 by Jelly Roll Morton. In keeping with that time period, the band turned to Fleischer Studios (home of Betty Boop) to use some of their historic animations for a brand new video for the track.

“When I first started the Zippers the Max and Dave Fleischer cartoons were a huge part of our inspiration. The look, the music, all of it," commented Jimbo Mathus. "So to have their blessing to use some of these characters and create something new with it is thrilling to me.”

“Fleischer Studios has a long history of bringing together the best in music and animation, so the opportunity to continue that great tradition with a band like the Squirrel Nut Zippers, nearly 100 years after debuting the first sound cartoon in 1926, is a wonderful honor; and one that would surely put a smile on Max Fleischer's face,” commented Jeni Mahoney.

The Squirrel Nut Zippers began their musical journey in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in the mid 1990’s, as a musician’s escape from the cookie cutter world of modern rock radio at the time. Jimbo Mathus along with drummer/percussionist Chris Phillips formed the band as a casual musical foray among friends and family in the area. It wasn’t long before the band’s quirky mix of jazz chords, folk music, and punk rock leanings spread out of the region and attracted a national audience.

Between 1995-2000 the Squirrel Nut Zippers sold over three million albums. Their watershed album, Hot (1996) was recorded in the heat of New Orleans, fueled by a smoldering mix of booze and a youthful hunger to unlock the secrets of old world jazz. This passion mixed with klezmer, blues and random bits of contemporary musical leanings became the bands signature style. At the time, there were few other bands inhabiting this space. The album would eventually break free of any “jazz” stereotypes and land on commercial radio, taking the band to remarkable heights for what was essentially an anti-establishment sound.

“Animule Ball (Unknown)”, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You (Crewe/Gaudio, arr. Dr. Sick)”, “She's Ballin (Mathus)”, “Train On Fire (Mathus)”, “Mr Wonderful (Mathus)”, “I Talk To My Haircut (Rev Fred Lane)”, “Purim Nigrum (Unknown)”, “Cookie (New Orleans Willie Jackson)”, “Happy Days Are Here Again (Ager/Yellen)”, “Summer Longings (Stephen Foster)”

Iconic, but needs a few notes
Color: Gold/G-15 Green, Lens Width: 58 Millimeters
A great style, especially for those of us who don't go for the original Aviator style. But these sunglasses do need a few notes. The size on these have 58mm-diameter lenses with 15 mm between the lenses (if my decoding of the code on the side is correct. This is the largest size in this style, and even at that they are just *slightly* too small at the ears for my head. For context, the Ray Ban Wayfarer with a 50mm lens and 22m nosepiece fits perfectly. Also these, like the original Aviators, are intended to cover pretty much the entire eye socket, so if you're seeing light coming in from the side or top...they are too small for you. In other words, if you don't have a specific size head, these may not work for you and you'll be frustrated. I know it's hard to buy online since you don't get to try them on. OTOH, it's a little unethical (in my opinion) to go to a brick-and-mortar store just to try them on so you can turn around and buy them off of Amazon. DIYD and all that. Assuming the fit is acceptable, these are very well made sunglasses. They just *feel* like quality and the lenses are fantastic. There is some concern on Amazon about some Ray Bans being fakes. The pair I received are the real thing - look for the etched R-B on the left lens (not the lens with the white logo on it), the R-B logo on the nosepieces, the lenses being made of glass (not plastic) and the identifier engraved on the underside of the bridge...these are indicators that you have a genuine pair in your hands. I purchased directly from Amazon, not a "fulfilled by Amazon" purchase, so caveat emptor on that score. All in all, an outstanding pair of glasses at a good price.

The Real Deal, get them
Color: Gold/G-15 Green, Lens Width: 55 Millimeters
Lets me start by saying I love glasses and not only that, I am loyal to the multiple pair that I own. That being said I was pretty pissed when some punk kid stole my bag off the beach with my favorite pair, which was a pair called the tonette by electric visual. Great glasses, light, stayed on the face, and looked good but this time around I wanted something a little different. I had seen a pair of these worn around only once and I noticed they werent the over worn aviator style, one of the reason I got these, and immediatly fell in love. Went to the mall the next day and wasnt too surprised when the guy said "for you ill give you a nice deal and only charge you 120.00" needless to say, I gently put them down and walked out. Later that day, I ordered these for 30% off the mall price and got them 2 days later. PRAISE THE LORD FOR PRIME. PROS: -authentic ray bans -comes with the leather case which I still use 6 months after purchase -great tint -great glasses CONS: -they are a little small but fit my face fine, if your looking for a lot of coverage or have a big head...these probably arent for you -wire frame, these are my first wire frame glasses and yes they are more sensitive than my old pair but im still rocking them, if you cant baby a pair of glasses dont be surprised if you bend them little OVERALL: get these, dont be scared if you think your getting ripped off cause youre not. These are the real deal, just do it

Not cheap, but you get what what you pay for!!!
Color: Gold/G-15 Green, Lens Width: 58 Millimeters
After seventeen years in the blazing sun of Tucson, Arizona, I FINALLY broke down and brought myself (what I hoped was) a quality pair of sunglasses! I had gone through countless pairs of cheapies and had decided it was time. In the back of my mind, admittedly, I wondered if it was worth it... (I can be tight with a buck). The verdict? WORTH EVERY PENNY!!! My first impression? They felt heavy. Not uncomfortably, mind you, but the mass of something well made. After a day or two that only makes them more comfortable... And yes, over time, a few expected random scratches, but far fewer than their lower priced counterparts. And it's not like I baby them. They get beaten up. And they only seem to look BETTER instead of worse... a true sign of quality! This won't be my last pair. But I don't anticipate having to replace them for a long while. In a nutshell? Buy 'em. You won't regret it!

My Most-Worn RayBans By Far
Color: Gold/G-15 Green, Lens Width: 55 Millimeters
These are what you buy when you look absolutely horrible in teardrop Aviators, which I do. I've even had commissioned salespeople tell me not to wear teardrop aviators, that's how bad they look on me. I purchased these in 2012 after owning a pair of Ray Ban New Wayfarers. I wanted something more stylish and more vintage looking. These are light, the earpieces practically disappear on your face, and the lens quality is outstanding. They've been dropped many times but so far, they're still gleaming like new. The nose pads can irritate my nose after long periods of wear, but they're still way more comfortable than my optical glasses. I wear these when I know I'm going to be in the sun for a long time because they don't give me big tan lines on the side of my face. I tried a 55mm, but ended up needing a 58mm to fit my big head. The lenses on the 58mm are a tad taller than I would like, but they provide excellent sun protection and they don't look bad on me at all. Ironically, I bought my dad a pair of 55mm American Optical sunglasses and they're almost exactly the same size and shape as the 58mm Caravans. They do provide more wrap than the American Optical. I've gotten a lot of compliments about these, maybe more than any other pair of sunglasses I've ever owned.
